Freezing rain, heavy rainfall warnings issued for Nova Scotia

Temperatures across the province are a bit warmer but nonetheless spiteful as freezing rain makes for tricky driving on Monday.

Environment Canada has issued freezing rain and rainfall warnings for much of the province, including the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The national forecaster says some areas could see four to six hours of freezing rain before the temperature rises above 0 C and the precipitation changes to rain.

95.7 NewsRadio meteorologist Allister Aalders says the mixture of rain and freezing rain will move in early this afternoon for HRM.

“In the city a few hours of freezing rain this afternoon before mixing over to rain later this afternoon,” he says. “Inland communities will see a prolonged period of freezing rain, four to six hours worth into this evening before changing over to rain.”

Aalders says with temperatures at or near the freezing mark, the rain will freeze on contact and that could create slippery driving and walking conditions and can build up on things like trees and power lines.

As for the rainfall, Environment Canada says when the changeover happens, regions in an area stretching from Yarmouth to Guysborough counties could see anywhere from 25 to 40 mm.
