Ernesto expected to track ‘well south’ of Nova Scotia: Canadian Hurricane Centre

The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth continues to monitor Hurricane Ernesto’s progress.  As of Friday morning, the storm was classified as a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 160 km/h and is forecast to be over Bermuda on the weekend.

In a statement issued Friday morning, CHC said that Ernesto’s center track will be well south of Nova Scotia as it travels northeastward. It is expected to approach southeastern Newfoundland and Labrador later on Monday.

Forecasters say that since the storm circulation is likely to be quite broad with tropical air and downpours spreading well beyond its center Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador could see at least some rain directly or indirectly on Monday.

The Hurricane Centre says that Hurricane Ernesto’s size and intensity will kick up the surf along Nova Scotia’s Atlantic coastline beginning Saturday. This can create hazardous surf conditions and rip currents.

The CHC says the probability of wind impacts in Nova Scotia is very low at we can expect to see some rain from the storm.

Staff at CHC are expected to release another statement about the storm Friday afternoon.
