CITYnews halifax: Road closure in Fairview as crews to dismantle damaged crane

A damaged crane that prompted evacuations earlier this month is expected to be dismantled over the next day.

A road closure is scheduled for Dutch Village Road between Deal Street and Main Avenue starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday, lasting through the end of the day on Thursday, to allow for that work to be completed.

Concerns over the structural integrity of the crane forced a nearby apartment building and area businesses to evacuate on June 3, as responders said the crane was believed to be at risk of collapse.

The crane was stabilized by the next day, but now must come down, according to the provincial labour department.

“LSI officers have determined that the crane at Dutch Village Road needs to be dismantled for inspection to ensure compliance with safety requirements,” read a statement from a department spokesperson.

The associated road closure will impact vehicle and pedestrian traffic. That also means several Halifax Transit routes that go through the area will be on detour.
