Child Safety Link offers up car seat safety information in 9 languages

Child Safety Link is launching new videos to help families find the right car seat or booster seat for their kids.

As part of Child Passenger Safety Week, the IWK injury prevention program will be sharing videos on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube each day, along with posters and articles, in nine languages: English, French, Mi’kmaq, Arabic, Nepalese, Mandarin Chinese, Somali, Swahili and Tigrinya.

The video, “Is Your Child in the Right Seat,” goes through each stage of car seats and booster seats, from a newborn’s first ride home from the hospital to determining when a child can start using an adult seat belt.

“Although unintentional injuries on the road can affect all families; some families face additional barriers to accessing information about car seats including literacy or language barriers,” explained Tyro Setlhong, IWK Health diversity and inclusion coordinator.

“Providing accessible resources that reflect the diverse needs of families in Atlantic Canada helps us to meet the inclusion and equity goals of IWK Health.”

Child Safety Link says vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in children, and when used correctly, car seats and booster seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by up to 71 per cent.
