The conservation group says the protection of Cape LaHave Island in the Municipality of Lunenburg is a big deal because it is one of the largest islands ever conserved in the province. The municipality signed a conservation easement with the organization to ensure that the natural values of the island will be protected in perpetuity. The group says the 10-square-kilometre island will continue to be available for low-impact community recreational activities. Executive director Bonnie Sutherland said the island is one of Nova Scotia’s great treasures, adding that both birds and pollinators that inhabit the island are now protected. The island is known to be a stopover habitat for many migratory birds. Cape LaHave Island is Nova Scotia’s fifth-largest island at more than 2,600 acres in size.
