Boston Bruins name Brad Marchand next captain

Another Halifax-area hockey star has been named captain of an NHL team.

Hammonds Plains’ Brad Marchand will be the next captain of the Boston Bruins, the club announced on Wednesday.

Marchand is entering his 15th season with the Bruins and could cross the 1,000-game mark this year. He was a member of the 2011 Stanley Cup championship team and two other trips to the Stanley Cup Final.

“I am extremely proud of Brad and the hockey player he has become,” Bruins chief executive officer (CEO) Charlie Jacobs said in a statement. “Brad has been a Bruin for over 15 years and had the opportunity to learn from great leaders in Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron. He is ready for this opportunity and our whole team will learn from his competitive nature and tenacity. “I am confident he will represent our organization with heart and grit.”

Marchy is the man.

The Bruins are coming off a historic regular season in which they won 65 games but were upset by the Florida Panthers in seven games during the first round of the playoffs.

Marchand was drafted in the third round, 71st overall, by the Bruins in 2006 and has recorded 862 points (372 goals and 490 assists) in 947 regular season games.

Three Halifax-area stars are now captains in the NHL. Marchand joins Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon in wearing the “C” for their team.
