The Banook Canoe Club is getting funding from the province to make some environmental upgrades.

The province says the Dartmouth club is getting more than $330,000 from the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund.

“We are excited about dramatically decreasing our carbon footprint and contributing to improving the health of Lake Banook,” Jim Johnson, president of the Banook Canoe Club, said in a news release.

The money will be used to install rooftop solar panels, upgrade the heating and HVAC systems, and replace five gas powered safety boat engines with battery-powered engines.

Environment minister Tim Halman says the upgrades will transform the community hub into a sustainable gathering place for generations to come.
