Arrest made, over 100 tickets, warnings handed out near Halifax

The RCMP said it was focused on water safety on Grand Lake earlier this month and found many violations, including impaired boaters.

The Mounties, along with the federal fisheries and natural resources departments, undertook joint patrols of the Halifax-area lake on the weekend of July 19 to 21.

Officials said the patrols resulted in 121 criminal charges, tickets and warnings being handed out.

“During the patrols, 80 per cent of breath samples taken screened positive for alcohol. Breath demands also resulted in one seven-day suspension and one arrest,” read a news release.

That arrest came on July 20, as the RCMP assisted a boat that police said was taking on water as it was heading for shore. The driver, a 39-year-old man from Enfield, showed signs of impairment and failed a breath test.

“Officers will be out on the water patrolling coastlines throughout the summer,” the release said. “Don’t be surprised if we pull up to your recreational vessel to chat and to ensure responsible boating practices are being followed.”
