Gasoline prices in Nova Scotia jump as federal carbon tax kicks in

The federal carbon tax came into effect in Nova Scotia at midnight on Saturday, and that has moved the prices for fuels up significantly.

The regulated price for gasoline shot up by 16.7 cents to a new minimum price of 165.6. Diesel prices are up by much more. The price for fuel rose by 20.3 cents to 158.6.

And this is likely not the end of significant fuel price increases. The province’s Utilities and Review Board says the federal government’s Clean Fuel Regulations will take effect at midnight on Friday. According to the board, 3.74 cents per litre for gasoline and 4.17 cents per litre for diesel oil will be added in addition to any oil price fluctuations on the global markets.
