Updated statement calls for messy mix of weather

Halifax is now forecast to see 2-10 cm of snow, rain and strong winds

A messy mix of weather is heading Halifax’s way, as a nor’easter is expected to impact much of the Maritimes Tuesday into Wednesday. 

An updated special weather statement for the Halifax area, as of 10 a.m. Tuesday, was calling for just 2 to 10 cm of snow mixing with rain.

Environment Canada said the storm would start with heavy, wet snow in the afternoon before changing over to rain and then possibly back to snow on Wednesday.

For Halifax, the national forecaster shows snow starting in the mid-afternoon, so it could have an impact on the drive home Tuesday afternoon.

“The main event does begin this afternoon lasting through the evening and overnight with very strong winds and different types of precipitation,” said CityNews weather specialist Denise Andreacchi, pointing out that Halifax will be dancing around the freezing mark through the day. “There’s snow, rain and mixing in the forecast and this will fluctuate as the temperatures fluctuate.”

Winds are expected to gust to 60 km/h except 80 km/h along parts of the coast.

Eastern parts of the mainland into Cape Breton are under snowfall warnings with up to 25 cm expected.
