Environment Canada issues winter storm warning for Halifax

Halifax’s snowfall warning has been upgraded to a winter storm warning, with snow and strong wind in the forecast

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Halifax Regional Municipality ahead of a storm that’s expected to bring some of the highest snowfall totals of the season to the area. 

Environment Canada’s warning says Halifax will see 20 to 30 cm of snow starting later in the day on Thursday, with winds gusting up to 80 km/h.

The hourly forecast shows steady snow starting around 6 p.m. Thursday for Halifax, though flurries are expected on-and-off thoughout the day.

The national forecaster says snow will be heavy at times, and visibility could reduce to near zero in strong winds.

Conditions are expected to improve “later on Friday morning” according to the statement.

Other parts of the province, including the Valley and Lunenburg and Queens counties, are under snowfall warnings, with 15 to 25 cm of snow expected.

Meantime on Thursday, both the South Shore and Annapolis County regional education centres announced schools would dismiss 90 minutes early, ahead of the storm.
