As of Friday afternoon, the overnight lows into Saturday and Sunday are expected to be -16. With that in mind, Halifax Water is reminding customers that freezing temperatures can cause issues with plumbing. The water service lateral of a home usually enters in the basement or utility closet near the water meter. The utility recommends making sure there’s a safe heat source in this area. If you do lose water service during extreme cold, Halifax Water says to do the following: Check the Halifax Water website (halifaxwater.ca/notices) to see if there is a known water service outage in your area. If you are not impacted by a known water service outage, please contact our 24/7 emergency line at 902-420-9287. If there is not a known water service outage in your area, we recommend that you close the water shut-off valve controlling water flow inside your home. This can help minimize flooding from frozen, cracked, or split plumbing during caused by freezing temperatures. Most can find their water shut-off valve near where the water line enters the home, between the entry point and the water meter. If your shut-off valve doesn’t work, call Halifax Water at 902-420-9287.
