Local police are looking for a suspect they believe is involved in a scam targeting seniors.

Both Halifax Regional Police and RCMP have received a number of reports in the last week about a scam where fraudsters pretend to be a family member claiming they’ve been arrested and are in jail.

Then a second person comes on the line, usually pretending to be a legal representative, telling the victim they need to pay money to get their loved one released from custody.

On some of the calls, arrangements were made to pick up the money in person.

Police have released a surveillance photo of a suspect described as a Black man, in his 20s to 30s, around 6 feet tall with short dark hair and glasses.

“In two instances, the suspect(s) have identified themselves as a police officer,” police said in a news release. “We are advising citizens that police will never make this type of call.”

“If you receive a call from someone representing themselves as a police officer and they request money for bail, this is a scam. Do not provide or confirm any personal or financial information and hang up the phone.”

If you get a suspicious email or phone call asking for money, make sure it’s legitimate before handing over any cash or credit card numbers.

“You should not give personal information to anyone, whether solicitation occurs by email, telephone or in person, unless you have initiated the contact or you are certain of the identity of the individual and/or the legitimacy of the organization they claim to represent,” police said.
