An emergency overnight winter shelter will soon be opening in Lower Sackville.

The province is contributing $378,000 to support a 20-bed facility for all genders that will operate on evenings and overnights at St. Elizabeth Seton Church on Metropolitan Avenue.

Beacon House will provide staffing and support services.

“The Beacon House Interfaith Society has operated the Sackville Area Warming Centre since February 2022,” the non-profit volunteer organization’s executive director Cheryl Newcombe said in a news release.

“This funding from the province enables us to provide shelter overnight through these cold winter months and build on the wonderful support we receive from our volunteers and the community.”

A 40-bed emergency shelter for all genders in Halifax is already operating on North Park Street, and a 20-bed overnight shelter for men will open on Dundas Street in Dartmouth on Monday, with 902 Man Up providing staffing and support services for both.
