Friday is opening day for hunters as general deer season kicks off and the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables wants everyone to be safe.

“People planning to be in the woods this time of year are reminded to wear hunter orange, respect private landowners and keep pets on a leash,” Tory Rushton, the department’s minister said in a news release.

Hunting is only allowed on the next two Sundays, October 30 and November 6.

The general deer season runs until December 3, and the hunting seasons for other types of game vary.

And if you’re taking your dog for a walk, keep them close as approved traps and snares can be set in wildlife habitats — on land and in water — until March 31.

Hunters heading into the woods are required to carry a compass, a knife or hand axe and waterproof matches.

A map or GPS, first-aid kit and fully charged cell phone are also a good idea, and they should let someone know where they’ll be and when they plan to return home.

With avian influenza circulating, hunters and fur harvesters are also asked to take precautions when handling game such as wearing a mask and rubber gloves and cleaning game in a ventilated area. They should also cook meat thoroughly, and clean and disinfect tools and contaminated surfaces.

“People should not eat or handle wildlife that appears sick or died from an unknown cause,” the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables said. “They should also prevent pets from coming into contact with sick or dead wildlife.”

“Anyone who becomes ill after handling or eating game should see a healthcare provider or call 811.”
