The province and a local community organization have opened centres to provide warm spaces for those experiencing homelessness as Halifax sees temperatures plummet.

The Nova Scotia government opened an emergency shelter at the George Dixon Centre, located at 2502 Brunswick St., on Monday night. That shelter is expected to be open again on Tuesday night, from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.

The Halifax warming centre is also being opened to serve people in need during the day. It’s at 1479 Barrington St. down a large stairwell to the left of St. Matt’s church.

The centre will be open from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and again from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Temperatures in Halifax are expected to drop to -17 on Tuesday night, with the windchill making it feel closer to -25.
