Mayor hopes modular units in Dartmouth will open by Christmas

The mayor says he’s hopeful some modular housing in Dartmouth will be ready by Christmas. 

The units will be used as shelter for some of Halifax’s homeless population, but the city has faced harsh criticism after a delay has seen those shelters pushed back as the winter weather arrives.

Mike Savage, in an interview with CityNews, said he believes the city has stepped up in an area they’re not traditionally responsible for.

“This is not something the city has ever done before,” Savage said. “We’ve taken on the challenge and we have said that we want to be part of the solution.”

Savage also saying he’s got some concerns with the new provincial housing task force that will look to speed up development in the HRM, but says he thinks there’s an opportunity for the city and the task force to work together.
