Disability Rights Coalition to rally outside Province House Friday

The rally is set to take place noon time outside of the provincial legislature

A rally is set to take place outside Province House on Friday as the Disability Rights Coalition calls on the incoming government to provide better living support to people with disabilities.

The coalition says whichever party wins the Aug. 17 provincial election needs to end what they call the ‘warehousing’ of persons with disabilities in segregated institutions and provide support for all persons with disabilities to live with dignity in the community.

Victoria Levack is with the coalition and she told NEWS 95.7 fill-in host Todd Veinotte all three parties endorsed a 2013 plan to provide community based living supports in the next couple years, but they are back-sliding on that commitment.

“So far they only have plans to close one in 2022 and they said they were going to close all of them by 2023,” she said.

She says they are calling on the winning party to keep its promise and fully implement the plan community integration by 2023.

“I’m 30 years old and I lived in the nursing home with people almost triple my age for the past nine years,” said Levack.

“Many of these people have cognitive disabilities so it makes it very hard to communicate with them. I get very lonely and I feel that I’ve been forgotten by my government and despite the fact with all the work I do to support this province, the government is not supporting me.”
