CITYnews halifax : Macdonald Bridge to see five nights of overnight closures

Starting Sunday, the Macdonald Bridge in Halifax will be closed overnight for five straight nights.

Halifax Harbour Bridges says that beginning at 9 p.m. on Sunday, the cross-harbour span will be closed overnight and reopen at 5:30 a.m. the following day.

The action will happen from Sunday until Thursday at the same times each night.

According to HHB, the closures are needed to allow for the replacement of the lane control system, which shows which lanes are open in each direction.

The maintenance will involve the removal of the existing equipment on the bridge gantries, replacing fibre-optic cables and connections, and installing and commissioning new equipment.

HHB says they cannot do this safely above live traffic.

The sidewalk and bike lane will remain open during these closures while drivers are encouraged to use the MacKay Bridge instead.
