CITYnews halifax: 24-year-old identified via fundraiser as victim in Bridgewater fire

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help the family of a woman who died in a house fire last week in Bridgewater.

According to a post on the crowdfunding platform, the victim was 24-year-old Amitoj Kaur, who came from India as an international student in 2020. The post was put together by Gobind Nishan Singh, who said she is heartbroken over the news of her sister’s death.

Kaur came to the country “full of ambition, hope, and big dreams for her future. Because of her deep sense of responsibility, she worked tirelessly and could never manage to go back home to visit.”

The goal of the drive is to raise enough money to have Kaur’s body sent to her family in India.

“We want to ensure her parents and family can see her one last time, hold her close, and perform her final rites with the love and dignity she deserves,” the fundraiser reads.

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $44,000 had been raised.

The blaze ripped through a six-unit apartment building on King Street as it spread to a neighbouring structure with ground-floor commercial offices.

Acting Bridgewater Police Services Chief Dan MacPhee said the fire was so intense that it was not safe for first responders to go inside when they arrived, adding there was nothing to suggest the fire was suspicious.

“You couldn’t have survived being in that building at that time,” he said in an interview.
