A report of a hit-and-run in Halifax over the weekend led to police getting an illegal firearm off the streets.

Regional police says officers got a call just after 3 a.m. Sunday from a woman on Blowers Street who reported a man in an SUV had struck her vehicle’s side mirror.

According to HRP, the vehicle involved was found on Quinpool Road a short time later. The driver was stopped and arrested without incident.

While searching that vehicle, HRP says the officers found a loaded handgun and ammunition.

Taevon Downey, 25, is now facing a long list of charges, including for possession of a prohibited firearm and tampering with a serial number on a firearm.

He’s also charged with dangerous driving and is expected in court at a later date.

Police also say the person who made the original call was issued a seven day license suspension for having a blood alcohol concertation between 50 mg% and 79 mg%.
