New system allows Nova Scotians to opt in for clinical trials, other research

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston says the province is making it easier for residents to voluntarily participate in potentially groundbreaking medical research.

Houston says Nova Scotians can now provide consent to take part in clinical trials or other research when they register or renew their health card, or by using a new web-based portal to sign up.

They can also contact Medical Services Insurance, the province’s public health insurance program.

Options for participation include consenting to be contacted if they are a potential match for a clinical trial or other medical study, or by allowing their biological samples and health information to be used to support research.

As well, participants can give consent for their health information to be used for studies aimed at developing medical devices, drugs or other treatments.

The final option allows for sharing personal health information with approved organizations and businesses to develop new drugs, devices and technologies.

Those who choose to take part can select one, some or all of the options, and the premier stressed participation is voluntary and open only to Nova Scotians who are 19 and older.

“Medical advancements and discoveries depend on research and the people who participate in it,” Houston said in a statement.

“Supporting more Nova Scotians to take part in research gives them an opportunity to find hope that was not there before, to help improve care, advance treatment and contribute to the search for new cures.”
