Nearly half of Nova Scotians believe U.S. invasion is possible: Survey

According to a new Halifax-based research company, nearly half of Nova Scotians are concerned that American forces will invade Canada over the next 12 months.

The survey comes as the relationship between Canada and the U.S. continues to intensify after U.S President Donald Trump withdrew his invitation to Canada to join his Board of Peace on Thursday.

Conducted by Narrative Research between Jan. 13 and 15, before Prime Minister Mark Carney and the U.S. President appeared at the World Economic Forum, the survey shows 48 per cent of respondents in Nova Scotia said they’re very worried that our southern neighbours could turn their military gaze north, with that level of concern based on a rating out of 10.

According to Narrative Research COO and co-founder Margaret Chapman, this shows that many people are stressed.

“Some people may say that nearly half the population being concerned, it is not really that much,” she says. “But I see it as a big level of concern.”

Chapman adds that the results suggest Nova Scotians are thinking about Canada’s sovereignty in a new way, as are many right across the country.

National results of the survey indicated 46 percent of all Canadians fear an American invasion is possible this year.
