Flurries in forecast but calm weather expected for New Year’s Eve in Halifax

New Year’s Eve revellers will have plenty to do in downtown Halifax tonight as we welcome 2026, and it looks like Mother Nature is going to cooperate.

95.7 NewsRadio meteorologist Allister Aalders says it will be a relatively quiet end to 2025, with a chance of a few flurries in the forecast.

“Likely a few scattered flurries or brief bursts of snow,” Aalders says, “but the winds will be light and the temperatures not too cold, about -4 C inland and -2 C or -1 C in the city.”

As for New Year’s Day, Aalders says a low-pressure system will make its way into the region and bring one to five centimetres of snow for most areas.

“A few flurries to afternoon periods of snow, but then it will eventually switch to rain as temperatures rise above freezing,” he says.

For celebrations, Downtown Halifax is hosting its Delightful Downtown programming tonight with a special New Year’s light show. Hours are extended until 1 a.m. Celebrations at Grand Parade get underway at 11 p.m. with entertainment from Skratch Bastid, Lane Hall and Jupiter Reign. Fireworks are scheduled for midnight, with festivities expected to wrap up around 12:30 a.m.

Tomorrow, Mayor Andy Fillmore and the rest of Regional Council will host the annual New Year’s Day levee at City Hall from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
