As first reported by the news website allNewfoundlandLabrador, the college’s website says Dr. Harry Dang’s licence was suspended on Dec. 5. The site does not say why his licence was suspended. A spokesperson with the college said it could not comment on the matter. Dang did not respond to requests for comments. Dang is an award-winning ophthalmologist who practised at the Jackman Eye Institute in St. John’s, N.L., according to a notice on the province’s medical association website. Matthew Head, chief executive officer of the institute, said Dang has not practised there since Dec. 4, the day before the college says it suspended his license. “We will await the outcome of the review that the College of Physicians and Surgeons is undertaking,” Head said in an email. “We respect the process of this review and the decisions that may follow.” In the meantime, the clinic remains focused on safe, high-quality care, he added. A physician compensation list posted by the province shows Dang claimed more than $4.9 million in fees for services in the 2024-25 fiscal year, which was the highest amount in the province. The next-highest amount for fees claimed was nearly $2.5 million, also by an ophthalmologist. The records show that of the 10 highest-billing doctors in the province that year, eight were ophthalmologists. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 12, 2025.
