Dalhousie University locks out faculty amid contract dispute

by admin

CITYnews halifax / By Mark Hodgins

There’s uncertainty ahead at Dalhousie University, after the Halifax school locked out members of the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) on Wednesday.

After threatening the move earlier this week, the university initiated the lockout at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 20.

Talks between the university and the association, which represents nearly 1,000 faculty and other staff, ended in July with no new deal reached.

One of the major sticking points in those talks has been the issue of pay, with the faculty association saying wage increases have not kept pace with the rising cost of living.

The university says, the campus remains open, but all classes taught by members of the DFA are suspended.

Dalhousie also says students should plan to arrive on campus as usual in the fall, as residences and food services will remain open.

The fall school year is set to begin in about two weeks.
