Man facing 18 charges evading police in stolen car

CITYnews halifax / By Natasha O’Neill

One man is facing numerous charges after running from RCMP through provinces in a stolen car.

Mounties said the incident started on May 16 at around 2:30 p.m. when Cumberland County RCMP and Amherst Police responded to a report by a New Brunswick dispatch. The call told officers a police car was entering Nova Scotia.

The car’s movements were being monitored by RCMP using the vehicle’s GPS and communications in New Brunswick. At some point, Mounties in Nova Scotia took over the monitoring.

Amherst officers attempted to stop the car on Highway 2 in Upper Nappan, but the driver fled. RCMP followed the vehicle and deployed a spike belt on Southampton Road, damaging the suspect car.

But it kept going, onto Highway 104 as police tailed. At 2:49 p.m. police forced the car off the highway near the Fort Lawrence overpass and were able to arrest the driver. In the meantime the highway closed for police operation for over six hours.
