MacKay to see partial closure Thursday ahead of weekend Macdonald closure

It will be a little more difficult to cross the harbour to Dartmouth on Thursday night.

Halifax Harbour Bridges says all Dartmouth-bound lanes on the MacKay Bridge will be closed from Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. Friday.

“The overnight closure will accommodate bearing replacement work delayed last summer, and work associated with the continual removal of the MacKay toll plaza,” reads a media release from HHB.

Halifax-bound lanes on the MacKay will not be closed.

Meantime, vehicle traffic will be barred from the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge this weekend as part of ongoing maintenance work.

The closure begins Friday, May 2 at 7 p.m. and ends Monday, May 5 at 5:30 a.m.

This marks the second consecutive weekend the bridge will be closed to vehicles as part of Project LifeSpan, a two-year, $70 million project aimed at preserving the bridge towers and extending the structure’s lifespan.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross using a shared walkway. Cyclists are required to dismount and walk their bicycles through the pedestrian tunnel near the Dartmouth Tower.

Motorists are being advised to expect delays, use alternate routes and allow extra travel time.
