caught15 Driver with twice the legal limit in January: HRP data

Police continue to catch people getting behind the wheel after doing drugs or drinking too much alcohol.

According to the latest data from Halifax Regional Police, officers stopped and charged 45 people with impaired-related offences during the first month of the year.

Of the drivers, 32 of them were charged with impaired operation of a conveyance by alcohol, six face offences due to drugs and seven were given driving suspensions for operation of a conveyance while having consumed alcohol.

For the drivers that provided breath samples police note that 15 of them were marked down as having twice the legal blood-alcohol limit. Seven of the drivers did not provide a sample and were charged with the offence of refusal.

Police said that there were 15 calls from the public reporting a possible impaired driver.

“We thank the public for reporting suspected impaired drivers and encourage anyone to call 911 immediately if they suspect someone is driving impaired,” officials said.

This comes after RCMP released impaired driving statistics from last year which showed the vast majority of people are being charged for driving drunk in the province.

There were 1,398 drivers charged with impaired-related offences in 2024 across Nova Scotia.
