Halifax Region Police were called 832 times over the weekend for multiple investigations including a shooting that left one person dead and another in hospital.

Officers said they started the weekend by responding to an assault in progress near the 6100 block of Young Street in Halifax. Police found a man with what they believed were non-life-threatening injuries.

At 7:30 p.m. officials found the suspect nearby. The men are known to each other, police note.

As a result, a 48-year-old was held in custody and is charged with:

  • Robbery
  • Uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death
  • Assault by choking, suffocating or strangulation
  • Aggravated assault

On Saturday police responded at 7:40 a.m. to a break-and-enter that just happened on Skeena Street in Dartmouth. A man damaged the rear door of a residence and went inside where he was confronted by the homeowners.

The owners were able to “usher” the man back outside when he tried to get into their vehicle. Officials reported no physical injuries and officers arrived by 7:50 a.m. to arrest the suspect.

The 60-year-old man is scheduled to appear in a Dartmouth court to face charges of break-and-enter into a residence and mischief, police said.

On Jan. 19 a shooting near Lahey Road and Clarence Street resulted in a homicide investigation.

Police were called at 2:50 a.m. to multiple reports of gunshots in the Dartmouth community. Officers found a 30-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman suffering from wounds.

Both were sent to hospital where the man died of his injuries. The woman’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening, officials said.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to contact HRP or Crime Stoppers.
