Halifax RCMP are investigating a new phone scam involving a popular e-commerce website and someone impersonating a police officer.

On Sept. 12 a resident of Lawrencetown received a phone call from someone claiming to be a security representative from Amazon.

The victim was informed that there was suspicious activity on their Amazon account and was then transferred to another person claiming to be from a law enforcement agency who said the RCMP was investigating unusual Amazon transactions.

The victim was ordered to withdraw some money and give it to an undercover RCMP officer. The scammers also reportedly provided the victim with a phone number of the Nova Scotia RCMP headquarters and a fake name for an officer that was supposedly working on the case.

According to an RCMP release, a man did arrive at the victim’s home to collect the payment. The suspect is said to be a man in his mid 30s with light curly hair driving a black Ford Fusion with a New Brunswick licence plate.

Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP 902-490-5020 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
