The Halifax Hoopers were unveiled on Tuesday as the newest member of The Basketball League.

The league features 40 teams across North America. The Hoopers are the second Atlantic Canadian team after the Saint John Port City Power were announced earlier this year.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve had a professional basketball team,” said a news release from Geoff Clyke, Team Market Owner. “Our city and province are growing in population and talent. We want to showcase our talent and give our local community a team to cheer on.”

Clyke said the regular season will run from March to May and the team will play 12 games at home and 12 games on the road. It’s not clear right now where the team will play its home games.

According to the release, the Hoopers plan to host tryout event in Atlantic Canada this fall.

Halifax previously hosted two professional teams in the former National Basketball League of Canada, the Rainmen and most recently the Hurricanes.
