xShubie Park fundraiser in honour of Dalhousie student-athlete’s cancer battle

A trio of Dalhousie University student-athletes have organized a fundraiser in honour of a former teammate who was sidelined by cancer.

in 2023, Louis Fiset, Noah Stevens and Owen Hamilton-White helped raise $8,000 on behalf of Grayson Domingues, who had to step away from playing football for the Dalhousie Tigers to battle the disease.

While the 2023 event was a virtual event, this year the three have created One Run, an in-person 5-kilometre event in support of the QEII Hospital where Grayson had tumours removed this past winter.

The organizers say they hope to raise some $10,000 for the hospital’s Patience Assistance Fund during the Saturday event in Dartmouth’s Shubie Park.

“The QEII Patient Assistance Fund is essentially thousand dollar grants that go to patients with long, extended days in the hospital,” says Fiset, noting the fund helps with food, rent or other out-of-care costs.

“It is just a fantastic cause so whether (people) donate or come to the event or even just buy an event shirt, all the funds go to the same place.”

As for Domingues, Fiset says his condition has been improving since having had tumours removed this past winter at the QEII and he’s planning on returning to Dalhousie this fall.
