As the holiday season nears its end, Halifax Regional Police is offering up some safety tips for residents.

According to HRP, there’s a number of things people can do to keep themselves and their homes safe such as remembering to lock all doors and windows if you’re heading out.

Police said it’s a good idea to leave lights or a TV on to make it look like someone is home to deter would be criminals.

Some other tips include leaving outside lights or motion sensors, leaving a spare key with a trusted neighbour or loved one, and locking your vehicles.

If you’re putting recyclables to the curb, it’s recommended you cut up large boxes from new purchases to make sure you’re not advertising to criminals what new valuables you have in your home.

Meantime, HRP is also reminding residents to not drive impaired or ride with someone you suspect may be impaired.

If you see suspicious activity, you can contact police or Crime Stoppers.
