There was a large emergency response at the Canada Post facility in north end Halifax on Wednesday.

Halifax Fire chief Dave Meldrum said crews were called around 12:30 p.m. to the Almon St. facility to reports of a broken package that had leaked an unknown substance.

“There are no signs or symptoms of illness and no perceived risk to the public,” Meldrum said.

Several fire trucks and police cars could be seen at the post office and workers appeared to have been evacuated.

Meldrum said crews were working to identify the substance. As of 2 p.m., some crews had left the scene.
