N.S. farmers get second chance at support program after this summer’s extreme weather

Nova Scotia farmers impacted by this summer’s extreme weather events can still get help from the AgriStability program, even if haven’t yet signed up.

The province’s agriculture minister announced farmers who did not previously enroll in AgriStability for this year can now participate in the program as late participants until December 31, 2024.

Greg Morrow says extreme weather has created many challenges for Nova Scotia’s agriculture industry and the province is committed to adjusting to those conditions.

AgriStability supports farmers experiencing a large decline in farm income by providing protection for income losses of more than 30 per cent.

Morrow says the department of agriculture, in collaboration with the federal government, has agreed to implement late participation in the program to ensure farmers have the time and support they need to protect their operations.

AgriStability is one of the business risk management programs offered under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). The program is cost-shared 60 per cent federally and 40 per cent provincially/territorially.
