A house fire in Kings County Tuesday morning claimed the life of an 83-year-old man.

Firefighters and other first responders were called to an address on Sandy Court in Aylesford around 7:05 a.m. after a report of a fire inside a home.  Police officers arriving on the scene learned that a window air conditioning unit had caught fire, and the blaze was isolated to one room of the house.

A neighbour had pulled the unit from the window and put out the flames before the arrival of the first responders but was unable to get into the house because of thick smoke.

When they arrived, firefighters made entry and found the victim and brought him outside to a waiting ambulance.  The man was taken to hospital but later died.

The Nova Scotia Fire Marshall’s office is investigating, but preliminary indications are that the fire’s cause was not suspicious.
