لكن بسبب عدم قانونية تداول الماريغوانا في جميع دول العالم تقريبا، بقيت هذه النبتة بعيدا عن الأبحاث الطبية وتطبيقاتها العلاجية، قبل أن تدخل في تكوين عدد من الأدوية، لا سيما في الولايات المتحدة.

وهناك أدوية كيماوية تستخدم في علاج مرض السرطان تعتمد على مركبات مأخوذة من الماريغوانا، بعد أن تمت الموافقة عليها في الولايات المتحدة لاستخدامها من قبل مرضى السرطان.

ومن بين هذه الأدوية “الدرونابينول”، وهي كبسولة تحتوي على مادة هيدروكنابينول، وقد تمت الموافقة عليها من قبل إدارة الغذاء والدواء الأميركية لعلاج الغثيان وفقدان الشهية والوزن الناجم عن العلاج الكيماوي.

كما يستخدم في الولايات المتحدة دواء “نابيلون”، وهو عبارة عن ماريغوانا صناعية تعمل على علاج الغثيان والقيء، وهما من الأعراض الجانبية للعلاج الكيماوي.

ويساعد دواء يطلق عليه اسم “نابيكسيمولز”، ويعتمد على مكونات من الماريغوانا، في التخفيف من آلام أمراض أخرى، وهو عبارة عن بخاخ يتم تناوله عبر الفم.

وتتوفر أدوية الماريغوانا حاليا في كندا وأجزاء من أوروبا وتستخدم لعلاج الألم الناجم عن السرطان وتشنجات العضلات المرتبطة بالتصلب.

وتلعب الماريغوانا دورا مشابها لأقوى مسكنات الألم للأشخاص الذين يعانون من آلام السرطان، كما يخفف من الاعتلال العصبي الناجم عن تلف الأعصاب الناجمة عن العلاج الكيماوي.

وأثبتت بعض الدراسات أن الماريغوانا تلعب دورها فعلات في تبطيء نمو بعضل الأورام السرطانية، وفي بعض الحالات تعمل عل وقفها.

لكن دراسات أخرى أظهر وجود علاقة بين تعاطي الماريغوانا كمخدر وتطور أنواع مختلفة من السرطانات.
