REUTERS أيمن الظواهري وتقول التقارير إن عمر، الذي كان في أواخر الأربعينيات من عمره لدى مصرعه، قد قضى سنوات طويلة من عمره في أفغانستان وكان من المقربين من زعيم التنظيم السابق أسامة بن لادن. وكان ذات يوم من نشطاء مجموعة الجهاد الإسلامي في كشمير ذات الصلة بالقاعدة، وقد أشارت التقارير إلى علاقته الوثيقة بالمتشددين في كشمير لذلك تم تعيينه زعيما للقاعدة في جنوب آسيا. ملاذ آمن ونسبت وكالة رويترز لمصادر من المناطق القبلية في باكستان على الحدود مع أفغانستان القول إنه عقب مصرع بن لادن كان الظواهري يسعى لإعادة تنظيم القاعدة وركز اهتمامه على جنوب آسيا. في الذكرى الثامنة لمقتل بن لادن: أين تنظيم القاعدة؟ من هو الطبيب الباكستاني الذي ساعد الأمريكيين في قتل بن لادن؟ الرئيس الأمريكي يؤكد مقتل ابن زعيم القاعدة السابق بن لادن وتابعت المصادر قائلة: “بدأت القاعدة تجند مقاتلين في أفغانستان، وعين عاصم عمر أميرا للتنظيم في جنوب آسيا لصلته القوية بالإسلاميين داخل باكستان”. وقالت المصادر إن عمر هو الذي سهل انتقال بن لادن إلى ملاذ آمن في مدينة آبوت آباد الباكستانية حيث عاش لسنوات دون أن يعرف أحد بذلك إلى أن نجحت القوات الأمريكية في قتله.
