مايكل كننجهام ونُشرت في “ليتراري هب” في ١٥/٧/٢٠١٩ أتمنى لو بوسعي القول إنه كان من قبيل الصدفة أن أنشر في عام 1991 روايةً اسمها «الساعات»، والتي نشأت عن يومٍ مُتخيل في حياة فرجينيا وولف، في أوائل العشرينات، حين اكتشفت أنها تكتب رواية سيصير عنوانها «السيدة دالاوي» وليس كما كان في مخططها الأصلي؛ رواية اسمها «الساعات». كان استخدامي لعنوان وولف الأصلي سرقة لا أكثر، ولو أنها سرقة ذات مقاصد نبيلة. وحقيقة أنها كانت سرقة مشروعة (لا يمكن أن يكون للعناوين حقوق ملكية حتى لو لم تكن ملكيةً عامةً بعد) تخفف حدة الأمر قليلًا فقط. وأقول إنني عنيت من الأمر الإجلال. بدا من الصواب أن على روايتي، التي لم تكن لتوجد دون وولف، أن تُفتّش عن عنوانٍ كانت قد ألقت به في كوم المخلفات. كانت تدور روايتي، بعنوانها الملائم، حول عظمة «السيدة دالاوي»، لكنّها كانت أيضًا، على نحوٍ أكثر إلحاحًا، عن لغز خلق الكتاب. إنها أحد الأسئلة الجوهرية التي تخص عملًا أدبيًا ذا شأن: كيف وصلت الكاتبة بما لا يتعدى بضعة صور ونزعات إلى رواية مثل «السيدة دالاوي»؟ وعند أية نقطة وبأية وسيلة التحم الاضطراب الداخلي للعقل والقلب ليُشكّل جملة، ثم جملة أخرى وأخرى ثم في النهاية سرد كامل متسامٍ؟ أتمنى ألا يخيب أمل أحد لسماعه أنني، في روايتي، لا أحلّ هذا اللغز بعينه. لكن، على حد علمي، نادرًا ما يحلّ الروائيون الألغاز، هذا إن فعلوا على الإطلاق؛ يأمل الروائيون فقط أن يسلطوا الضوء وأن يتعمقوا في ألغاز البشر الجوهرية وأن يرسموا النقاط التي تحولت عندها الأسئلة البسيطة نسبيًا إلى أسئلة عميقة. عادةً ما يُغير الروائيون عناوين كتبهم، أكثر من مرةٍ على الأغلب، أثناء كتابتهم، وأحيانًا تعكس إعادة النظر في العنوان تحولًا أعمق في الطابع المُتغير للكتاب نفسه. يوحي عنوان وولف الجديد لروايتها التي كانت قيد الإكمال أنها قد قررت، في وقتٍ مبكرٍ نسبيًا، أنها لن تكتب بالتحديد الكتاب الذي قد عزمت على كتابته منذ البدء. إن كانت قد أكملت وولف رواية اسمها «الساعات» لم تكن لتكون هي «السيدة دالاوي» التي أصبحت حجر أساس أدب القرن العشرين. ليس لأحدٍ أن يعرف بالطبع إن كانت ستصبح رواية «الساعات» لوولف أقل شأنًا من «السيدة دالاوي»، لكنّها كانت لتكون رواية مختلفة. كان «السيدة دالاوي» هو كتاب وولف الخامس. كان كتاباها الأوليان -«الرحلة بالخارج» و«الليل والنهار»- أفضل من معظم الأعمال الروائية، لكنّهما تقليديان إلى حدٍ ما؛ ليسا أعمال الكاتبة الراديكالية الثورية التي قد عرفناها. وكان بعد أن انتقلت فرجينيا وزوجها ليونارد من وسط لندن إلى ضاحية ريتشموند وأنشآ مطبعتهم التي سموها مطبعة هوغارث، أن بدأت بكتابة الكتب التي اختارت كتابتها، مثلما اختارت كتابتها، دون النظر إلى متطلبات المحرر أو دار النشر. وكما صرّحت في مذكراتها: “أنا المرأة الوحيدة في إنجلترا التي تملك حرية كتابة ما تريد كتابته”. من بين المنشورات الأولى لمطبعة هوغارث كانت مجموعة القصص القصيرة لوولف «الاثنين والثلاثاء» وروايتها الثالثة «غرفة يعقوب». كانت «غرفة يعقوب» خطوةً هائلةً لها كروائية: وهي بالأساس رسمٌ للشخصيات من دون شخصية رئيسية؛ لوحةٌ لشخصٍ معظمها مُستمد من آراء الآخرين ممن يعرفونه. كان كتابًا جيدًا للغاية وإبداعيًا. لكنّ كتابها التالي «السيدة دالاوي» (المعروف سابقًا بـ «الساعات») أصبح أول أعظم كتبها بلا منازع. ما أرادت وولف كتابته حين شرعت في كتابة روايتها الخامسة هو سرد عن لندن بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى، الحرب التي ستنهي كل الحروب، والتي لم تتسبب فقط في قتل 17 مليون شخصًا ولكن جاءت للعالم بمثل تلك الابتكارات الكارثية كالدبابات وقاذفة اللهب وغاز الخردل. عاد العديد ممن نجا من الجنود مشوّهين، صارت وجوههم وعقولهم يكاد لا يمكن التعرّف عليها بمعنى الكلمة. كانت الشوارع مسكونة بالأشخاص الذين كانوا، من ناحية، أشباح الصراع المُدمّرين بشدة، لكن من ناحية أخرى هم الأخوة والأبناء والأزواج العائدين للوطن لاستكمال حياتهم. عزمت وولف على كتابة رواية تقع أحداثها في إنجلترا المُتغيرة والمستعادة على نحو معقد؛ إنجلترا التي كانت تتخلص فحسب من بقايا حلم طويل وسيّء فُرض عليها، والتي لن تتعافى من خساراتها أبدًا. افتتحت تمهيدها بلندن الباقية على حالها، لندن ذات التماثيل وأبراج الكنائس والأجراس، وبرجلٍ في منتصف العمر يُدعى بيتر وولش يسير وسطهم، وبفرقةٍ من الجنود يسيرون متقدمين ليضعوا إكليلًا تذكاريًا لموتى الحرب عند نُصب Cenotaph في وايت هول. تائهًا في إخفاقاته وهشاشاته، يُفكر وولش في امرأة تُدعى كلاريسا… وبطريقةٍ ما يُسلّم القصة إليها. سيستمر بيتر وولش في لعب دور هام، لكنّ الكتاب سينتمي إلى كلاريسا دالاوي. وسيكون عنوانه «السيدة دالاوي» (نلاحظ اختيار وولف باستخدام اسم كلاريسا بعد الزواج). شغلت كلاريسا دالاوي محيط اهتمام وولف منذ أن بدأت الكتابة الروائية. تظهر السيدة دالاوي في رواية وولف الأولى «الرحلة بالخارج»، وفي العديد من القصص القصيرة، أبرزها «السيدة دالاوي في شارع بوند ستريت» والتي كتبتها قبل الرواية التي تحمل اسمها. كانت كلاريسا دالاوي هي النموذج المثالي لاستقامة الطبقة الإنجليزية العليا، إن كانت “استقامة الطبقة الإنجليزية العليا” تتضمن
