قبل الغزو الأميركي للعراق بعامين او ربما أكثر بقليل إتصل بي الأستاذ مصطفى الكاظمي (رئيس الوزراء الآن) هاتفيا من لندن، ولم أكن قد التقيته من قبل، مبلغا إياي بأن ثمة مؤتمرا سوف يعقد في العاصمة الأميركية واشنطن حول “الديمقراطية ومستقبل العراق” وأن إدارة المؤتمر قررت دعوة ثلاثة أشخاص كضيوف شرف اليه هم بالإضافة الي كنعان مكية، وآخر من الحركة الإسلامية، لم أعد أتذكر إسمه الآن. شكرته على الدعوة الكريمة وسألته عن الجهة المنظمة للمؤتمر فقال إنها المعارضة ممثلة بالمؤتمر الوطني العراقي. رددت عليه بتلقائية: “ولكن لا أعتقد أن هذه المعارضة أقل تخلفا من النظام الدكتاتوري الذي تتصدى له ولا أرى أنها تؤمن أساسا بالديمقراطية.” فأجابني بنبرة لا تخلو من أسى: “ماذا نفعل؟ هذا هو الموجود الذي لا نملك غيره.” ثم أضاف بعد أن لاحظ ترددي: “حسنا، سأتركك لتفكر بالأمر مليا وأتصل بك مرة أخرى.”
وقد اتصل بي بالفعل مرة أخرى بعد يوم او يومين من ذلك، لكنني اعتذرت له ثانية، متمنيا للمؤتمر النجاح في تحقيق الديمقراطية في العراق.
الحقيقة هي انني لم أكن مستعدا أن أرتكب نفس الخطأ الذي وقع فيه كنعان مكية، عندما تصور أن بإمكان المثقف الحداثي المتنور التأثير في السياسي الجاهل المدجج بخرافات القرون الماضية، ذاك الذي لا يهمه من المثقف سوى استغلال اسمه الإبداعي لتمرير مشروعه الخاص به، وهو الخطأ الذي اعتذر عنه صراحة للشعب العراقي في فترة تالية وانسحب من كل ما يربطه به.
بعد متاهة الجحيم التي ظل العراقيون طوال سبعة عشر عاما يدورون فيها أرى اليوم أيضا، حيث يسفك دم المئات من الشبان الأبرياء بدون ذنب ارتكبوه ويقتل المفكرون والكتاب والعلماء والأساتذة بدم بارد على قارعة الطريق، كم كنت على حق في اجتناب المشاركة بأي من تلك الحفلات التنكرية التي كان الجميع يتغنون فيها بديمقراطية كنت واثقا من أنها لن تقوم في ظل ذلك “الموجود” المهيمن الا على الجهل والدجل والخرافة والتزوير والجريمة وتقسيم الشعب الى طوائف متناحرة لا يهمها من الأمر كله سوى الحصول على حصتها من الغنيمة.
أجل، لقد ارتكبت الدكتاتورية الكثير من الجرائم، ولكن انظروا كيف عاث خصومها “المنقذون السماويون” في الأرض فسادا وما فعلوه باسم الديمقراطية أيضا بالشعب والوطن!
