فلاديميروفتش بارتولد محظوظًا بولادته لعائلة ألمانية- روسية ثرية، كانت تعمل في مجال البورصة، ولكن مجال المال والأعمال لم يستهويه، فاختار أن يشق طريقه في مجال مختلف تماماً، حيث كرس علمه ودراسته وحياته لكتابة وتفصيل بعض من تاريخ هذا العالم. قصة حب مع الشرق الساحر بعد تخرجه من المدرسة الثانوية، بدأ بارتولد أولى خطواته في مسيرته الأكاديمية عام 1887، مُلتحقاً بكلية اللغات الشرقية في جامعة سانت بطرسبورغ، وهنا لعب الحظ دوره في ولادته لعائلة ثرية، حيت ساعدته الإمكانات المالية لعائلته في السفر إلى الخارج لمواصلة رحلة التحصيل العلمي في المراكز العلمية في إيطاليا وسويسرا والنمسا. جذبه سحر وعراقة تاريخ الشرق الأوسط ليتخصص فيه ويتعمق في دراسته، ومن ثم تدريسه طوال حياته، حيث أمضى عامين في أوروبا الغربية، ودرس المخطوطات الشرقية، وحضر محاضرات أوغست مولر، وإدوارد ماير في هالي، و ثيودور نولدكه في استراسبورغ. عاد بارتولد مرة أخرى إلى جامعة سانت بطرسبورغ عام 1892، ليواصل جهوده من أجل الحصول على لقب بروفيسور في قسم تاريخ الشرق، وبدأ بالتدريس في هذا المجال حتى استطاع أن يتوّج جهوده العلمية بلقب الدكتوراه الـذي حصل عليه عن بحث بعنوان “تركستان في عصر الغزو المغولي”. عام 1905 حصل بارتولد على لقب بروفيسور في جامعة سانت بطرسبورغ، وبعدها بخمسة أعوام، حصل على عضويته في أكاديمية العلوم الروسية، كما أوصلته جهوده إلى تقلد منصب سكرتير اللجنة الروسية الخاصة بدراسة وسط وشرق آسيا. ترك بارتولد بصمات مؤثرة لدى العديد من الأجيال وأثرى عقولهم بتاريخ الشرق الأوسط حيث حاضر في جامعات موسكو وطشقند بين العامين 1925 و1927، وفي باكو عام 1924، واسطنبول عام 1926، ولندن عام 1923. بعد الثورة الروسية، تم تعيينه مديراً لمتحف بيتر الكبير للأنثروبولوجيا والإثنوغرافيا، وهو المنصب الذي شغله من عام 1918 حتى عام 1921. دارس مجتهد وباحث مثير للجدل برغم دراسته لتاريخ الشرق الأوسط، إلا أن بارتولد اهتم بشكل خاص في أبحاثه بتاريخ شعوب ودول آسيا الوسطى الإسلامية، كما ركز على التفاعل بين الحضارتين الشرقية والغربية وأيضاً تاريخ الإسلام، وظهر هذا من خلال مناقشته أعمال المؤلفين العرب والمستشرقين الأوروبيين، وهي “الإسلام” و”الحضارة الإسلامية” عام 1918، و”العالم الإسلامي” عام 1922، وأيضاً “مسيلمة” عام 1925. لم يكن بارتولد يخشى إثارة الجدل من خلال أفكاره، لذا قدم كتابه “الخليفة والسلطان” عام 1912، ليثبت أن تسليم السلطة الدينية من الخليفة العباسي إلى السلطان العثماني سليم الأول في القرن السادس عشر الميلادي، ما هي إلا أسطورة ظهرت في القرن الثامن عشر الميلادي ولا علاقة لها بالحقيقة. وأعطى بارتولد الأسبقية للوضوح وتنظيم المعرفة في أعماله، حيث استطاع بوضوح أن يناقش موقف الإسلام في تاريخ العالم من موقع المسيحية كقوة ثقافية في العالمين الروماني والشرقي. لغته الروسية كانت عامل القوة الذي ساعده في أن يُصبح متخصصاً فريداً في الإسلام في آسيا الوسطى، حيث استطاع أن يمنح الثقافات العباسية وما بعد العباسية مكانها الصحيح في التاريخ. مؤسس المدرسة الروسية لعلم الاستشراق لم يكن بارتولد أحد أكبر مؤرخي الحضارة في الشرق فقط، فهو يعتبر مؤسس المدرسة التاريخية للاستشراق الروسي، حيث قضى حياته مؤرخاً لآسيا الوسطى، فمنذ نشر مقاله الأول عام 1892 وحتى وفاته، نشر 670 عملاً، بما في ذلك 247 مقالة في موسوعة الإسلام، تم جمعها في تسعة مجلدات، فيما بلغت حصيلة كتابته أكثر من 400 مادة علمية ما بين كتب وأبحاث ومقالات، نشرها على مدار 42 عاماً من الإنتاج الثري. كتب بارتولد في سيرته الذاتية: “بدا لي من الطبيعي تماماً أن ينجذب المستشرق الروسي إلى منطقة كانت جغرافياً وتاريخياً أقرب إلى روسيا من البلدان الشرقية الأخرى”، كانت وسط آسيا هي المنطقة المقصودة، لذا فقد كان بارتولد أول من وضع دراسة تاريخ آسيا الوسطى على أساس علمي ثابت وأسس بالفعل هذا الفرع من الدراسات الشرقية. لم يدرس بارتولد آسيا الوسطى بمعزل عن غيرها، فقد أولى اهتماماً كبيراً لتفاعل العناصر الثقافية المتنوعة التي يرى أنها وراء تشكيل تاريخ آسيا الوسطى، وقد ركز جهوده على دراسة الحضارات الإيرانية القديمة والتركية المنغولية والإسلامية البدوية. وكان إسهام بارتولد الأكبر في دراسة آسيا الوسطى وإيران في تاريخ العصور الوسطى، منذ أوائل العصور الإسلامية حتى العصور التيمورية، وقد أرسى أساساً راسخاً لمعرفتنا بهذه الفترة في تاريخ آسيا الوسطى والأراضي الإيرانية الشرقية عموماً. كذلك أدرك بارتولد أهمية دراسة الفترة الأخيرة من تاريخ آسيا الوسطى، حيث درس الخان الأوزبكي في القرنين السادس عشر والتاسع عشر، عندما لاحظ أن هذه الفترة تنتمي إلى أقل الحقول تطوراً في تاريخ الشرق، والتي يرى أنه لا يجب تفسيرها بنقص المصادر، بل بسبب عدم اهتمام الباحثين. وفي عشرينيات القرن الماضي، انهى بارتولد دراسات استقصائية عامة عن تاريخ الطاجيك، وقد نُشرت للمرة الاولى باللغة التركية عام 1927، ثم تُرجمت إلى الألمانية عام 1935، والفرنسية عام 1945، فيما نشر المنشور الروسي الأصلي في عام 1968. مساهمة بارتولد في دراسة تاريخ وثقافة إيران لا يزال كتاب “المسح الجغرافي لإيران”، الذي نشر عام 1903، الدراسة الوحيدة من نوعها في ذلك الشأن، حيث بحث بارتولد بشكل منهجي الأدلة الأثرية والأدبية المتاحة لكل محافظة تاريخية في إيران من العصور القديمة إلى العصر الحديث. وفي هذا العمل، ناقش بارتولد إيران بمعناها الأوسع، حيث أنها جميع مناطق الشرق الأوسط التي تسكنها شعوب تتحدث اللغات الفارسية، من بلاد ما بين الرافدين إلى الهند، باستثناء آسيا الوسطى، والتي يشير إليها بارتولد في كثير من الأحيان باسم والثقافي لإيران، وكان عامل التميز الأهم لديه هو أنه لم يعتمد في بحثه على المصادر المكتوبة فقط، بل الأدلة الأثرية. تصديه لنظريات التفوق العنصري لم يكن بارتولد يخشى قول الحقيقة التي سيخلدها التاريخ، فقد وقف في وجه نظريات علماء ومستشرقي الغرب عن التفوق العنصري. خرج بارتولد برد شجاع على ادعاءاتهم بأن أوروبا هي مركز العالم، وأن شعوب الشرق لا تاريخ لها، وبالتالي فإن مناهج دراسة التاريخ التي وضعها المؤرخون الأوربيون لا يمكن تطبيقها على تاريخ الشرق، وكان رد بارتولد قاطعاً: “إن الناس هم الناس في كل مكان ليس بينهم فارق، وإن التباين بين حضارتي الشرق والغرب يمكن ردّه برمته إلى الأحوال التي وجّهت
