قبل هشام جعيط كتب عن المدينة العربية والإسلامية كثيرون من العرب والأجانب. لكنّ جعيط من خلال أُطروحته عن «الكوفة، نشأة مدينة» وضع نظرية للمدينة العربية (وليس الشرقية) لا تزال تُناقَشُ حتى اليوم،

فارقنا عن عمرٍ عالٍ المؤرخ والمفكر النهضوي التونسي الأستاذ هشام جعيط. وهناك واقعة طريفة تتعلق به. فقد دعاني مايكل كوك أستاذ الدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة برنستون عام 2003 إلى غداء مع أستاذي الألماني القديم جوزف فان أس. ولأن كلاً من مايكل كوك وفان أس كانا قد قرآ كتب هشام جعيط في السيرة النبوية، ومقالتَيَّ النقديتين عنها؛ فإنّ فان أس الألماني الشديد الاعتزاز بالتاريخانية والإنسانوية الألمانية ومواريثهما ترك الموضوع كلّه وانصرف لمجادلتي قائلاً: «ما أكثر المفكرين عندكم أنتم العرب، وما أقلّ المؤرخين!»، فرُحْتُ أستعرض الأسماء اللامعة للمؤرخين ممن كتبوا بالعربية من العراق ومصر والمغرب والجزائر وتونس ولبنان، وكان يلاحظ ضاحكاً: «هذا من الجيل الماضي مثلنا، وذاك مفكر أكثر مما هو مؤرخ…»، إلى أن عدنا فوصلنا إلى هشام جعيط، فتدخل مايكل كوك (ترجمتُ له في تلك السنوات كتابه العظيم: «الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر في الفكر الإسلامي»، مع زميلين آخرين). كوك قال: «الأستاذ جعيط مؤرخٌ كبير وقد تعلمتُ من كتابيه عن الكوفة وعن الفتنة الأولى أو الكبرى كما يسميها طه حسين». فان أس ابتسم وصمت، وأنا قلت: «نحن الشبان العرب في السبعينات من القرن الماضي تعلمنا من منهجه التاريخي المحكَم في الكتابين، ومن كتابه الصغير الفائق الأهمية: أوروبا والإسلام، وهو تاريخٌ وفكرٌ واستشرافٌ في الوقت نفسه»!

قبل هشام جعيط كتب عن المدينة العربية والإسلامية كثيرون من العرب والأجانب. لكنّ جعيط من خلال أُطروحته عن «الكوفة، نشأة مدينة» وضع نظرية للمدينة العربية (وليس الشرقية) لا تزال تُناقَشُ حتى اليوم، وسط تكاثر الدراسات عن عشوائية المدن الإسلامية الوسيطة. فمدينة جعيط ليست صراعاً بين البادية والتحضر، بل هي نظرية في تعددية التحضر العمراني والإنساني، واتّساق الحضارة. هكذا قال لي شارل بللا، المستشرق الفرنسي الراحل الذي كتب عن بيئة الجاحظ البصرية وهو يقارن بين كتابه هو وكتاب المؤرخ العراقي البارز صالح أحمد العلي عن مدينة البصرة، وهي أطروحة أيضاً من مطلع الخمسينات. فالمدينة العربية من وجهة نظر جعيط تمثّلُ وعياً تطور بسرعة باتجاه انطلاقٍ حضاري كبيرة تصنعه دولة كبرى. كانت الرؤى السائدة آنذاك أنّ «المدن الشرقية» نمطان كبيران: مدن القوافل في الصحراء وعلى حفافيها، ومدن الدول العظيمة على شاطئ بحرٍ أو نهر. أما جعيط فعدّ المدن العربية والإسلامية الناشئة تحولاً أو «قطيعة» نحو صناعة حضارة جديدة، دونما إنكارٍ لاستمرار النمطين الكلاسيكيين الآخرين اللذين ما لبثا أن تحوَّلا بدورهما إلى مواطن للعيش المتنوع في الازدهار الحضاري الكبير.

وما خرج جعيط على هذه الرؤية في جوهر الحضارة العربية الجديدة أو قلبها عندما كان يدرس بعد عقدين أو أكثر «حَدَث الدولة» في الحياة العربية؟ لقد تناقشنا طويلاً بشأن كتابه عن «الفتنة»، أي الصراع على الدولة أيام عثمان وعلي. كنتُ مشغولاً بقيام الأمة في التاريخ، وتكوُّن آيديولوجيا الجماعة. وكان مشغولاً بدولة المدينة التي اتجهت لإنجاز مشروع الأمة. وعندما كنتُ أُجادله في آيديولوجيا الوحدات الثلاث: وحدة الجماعة، ووحدة الدار، ووحدة السلطة أو الدولة، كان يجيب بأنّ الدولة في «المدينة» هي أساس الوحدتين الأُخريين في إرادة التحقق ووعيه. وهذا هو معنى الصراع أو ما سُمّيت الفتنة (الحرب الأهلية أو الداخلية). صحيح أنهم كانوا متنافسين على السلطة التي صارت خلافة لله في أرضه (!)، لكنهم ما كانوا مختلفين على أنّ الدولة تنطلق من المدينة. لقد كان كتاب جعيط في الفتنة كتاباً ملحمياً في عمقه وروحه المشبوبة وانشغاله بالحاضر العربي، ولذلك دخل على «المقدمة» وخرج منها عدة مرات. وكان ينزعج عندما أُمازحُه بأنّ المدينة – الدولة هي المدينة الإغريقية، فيجيب: بل هي دولة المدينة التي تسعى بوعي للانسياح في العالم، مقدمةً نمطاً حضارياً جديداً.

لقد كتب هشام جعيط كثيراً، ومنها دراساته في التاريخ المغاربي، وظلّت مسألة الدولة شغله الشاغل. لكنّ الذي لفت اهتمامنا نحن في المشرق كتابه الصغير: «أوروبا والإسلام»، رغم أنه ما بقي أحدٌ في المغرب أو المشرق إلاّ وكتب في «صدمة الغرب»؛ منذ الطهطاوي وخير الدين التونسي. لقد بلغ من غرامي بكتابه في الفتنة، أنني ما انتظرتُ ترجمته إلى العربية، بل سارعت لقراءته بالفرنسية على صعوبة ذلك عليّ؛ في حين انتظرت ترجمة أوروبا والإسلام. لكن عندما قرأتُ الترجمة، عدتُ فقرأتُه بالفرنسية. وفرنسية أستاذنا هشام جعيط شاعرية وساحرة، بقدر ما هي فرنسية أستاذينا العروي وعلي أومليل صاحية ودقيقة. جعيط لا يعُنى بحضور الحضارة الغربية بالمغارب والمشارق بوصفها «صدمة» رغم ورودها في الكتاب. الحضارات لا تتصارع بل تتداخل وتنتقل مراكزها في ازدهارها أو خفوتها. وإنما حصلت العقدة لدينا نحن العرب والهنود بسبب أهوال الاستعمار. وهو مقتنعٌ بإمكان تجاوُز هذه العقدة إن نجحت في ديارنا الدول الوطنية الحديثة. وما كان متفائلاً لهذه الناحية، لكنه في الوقت نفسه كان يقول: «نحن أمة تعدُّ مئات الملايين، وعاجلاً أم آجلاً سنخرج في هذا الموطن أو ذاك من عبء التاريخ، فنخرج من وطأة الحاضر أيضاً».

ما كان هشام جعيط مسلماً تقليدياً، لكنه عندما كان يتبسط أو يتحمس كان هو المثقف الكبير بالفرنسية يقول: «لسنا أرومة عربية فقط، بل نحن عائلة عريقة في الدين والإفتاء ومذهب مالك، ومدنية المدينة، وصناعة الحضارة».

غادرنا هشام جعيط، لكنّ روحه ستظل محلّقة جوّالة بين القيروان والكوفة وفاس والقاهرة. رحمك الله أيها العربي الكبير الخارج من الفتنة بالدولة.
