وبحسب موقع “شوسن إلبو” الكوري الجنوبي، فإن 40 في المئة من الأشخاص المسنين يعانون جفاف الفم، وذلك بسبب تراجع الغدد اللعابية في الفم، وهو ما يؤدي إلى تراجع مستوى اللعاب.
ويقول الأطباء إن الأشخاص الذين يعانون نقصا في اللعاب، يجدون صعوبة في التذوق ومضغ الطعام أو بلعه، كما أنهم يواجهون عدة عراقيل في النطق أثناء الكلام لأنهم لا يحركون لسانهم بسهولة.
ولا يقتصر الأمر على هذه الاضطرابات، لأن الشخص المصاب بجفاف الفم قد يعاني ألما مزعجا في اللسان، فضلا عن صعوبة في التنفس.
وأوضح البروفيسور، بارك كوان سو، أن اللعاب يقتل البكتيريا في الفم، وحينما يتراجع مستواه، فإن الإنسان يصبح أكثر عرضة لتسوس الأسنان ومرض اللثة وهو أمر قد يتطور إلى اضطراب على مستوى القلب.
وتشير التقديرات الطبية إلى أن الإنسان يفرز ما يتراوح بين 0.3 و0.5 ميليلتر من اللعاب في الدقيقة الواحدة، وحين ينزل هذا المستوى إلى ما دون 0.1 ميليلتر، يصبح الأمر منذرا بالخطر.
وتؤدي بعض أدوية ارتفاع ضغط الدم والاكتئاب والرعاش إلى إصابة الفم بالجفاف، لكن 90 في المئة من حالات الفم الجاف ليست ناجمة عن سبب محدد.
وينصح الأطباء من يعانون هذا الاضطراب الذي يرافق المسنين، بأن يتناولوا ما يكفي من السوائل، فضلا عن أكل الفواكه والخضار، لكن هذه العادات تخفف المشكل فقط ولا تحله بشكل جذري.
