AFP / حذّر الرئيس الأميركي دونالد ترامب الثلاثاء من أنّ الولايات المتّحدة ستمرّ بأسبوعين “مؤلمين جداً جداً” على صعيد مكافحة فيروس كورونا المستجدّ الذي لا ينفكّ يحصد أعداداً متزايدة من الضحايا في بلاده والعالم بأسره.
وقال ترامب خلال مؤتمره الصحافي اليومي في البيت الأبيض حول تطوّرات مكافحة وباء كوفيد-19 إنّ “الأمر سيكون مؤلماً جداً، سنجتاز أسبوعين مؤلمين جداً جداً”.
وإذ وصف ترامب جائحة كوفيد-19 بأنها “بلاء”، قال “أريد أن يكون كلّ أميركي مستعدّاً للأيام الصعبة المقبلة”، معرباً عن أمله في أن تتمكّن بلاده في نهاية هذه الفترة من “رؤية ضوء حقيقي في نهاية النفق”.
ووفقاً لإحصاءات جامعة جونز هوبكنز، فقد بلغ عدد الذين ثبتت مخبرياً إصابتهم بالوباء في الولايات المتحدة أكثر من 184 ألف شخص، توفي منهم أكثر من 3700 شخص.
ولا تنفك وتيرة الوفيات تتسارع، ولا سيّما في نيويورك، بؤرة الوباء في الولايات المتحدة.
وبحسب تقديرات البيت الأبيض فإنّ كوفيد-19 سيفتك في الولايات المتحدة بما بين 100 ألف إلى 240 ألف شخص إذا ما تقيّد الجميع بالقيود المفروضة حالياً لاحتواء الوباء، مقارنة بما بين 1,5 مليون إلى 2,2 مليون شخص كانوا سيلقون حتفهم لو لم يتمّ فرض أيّ قيود.
وبعدما كان يأمل في عودة الحياة في الولايات المتحدة إلى طبيعتها بحلول عيد الفصح في 12 نيسان/أبريل، أعلن ترامب الأحد تمديد العمل بإجراءات التباعد الاجتماعي المفروضة للحدّ من تفشّي الوباء حتى نهاية نيسان/أبريل، راضخاً في ذلك للتحذيرات التي وجّهها كبار العلماء في البلاد بشأن الأزمة المتزايدة.
