وتقول مورشتاين إنها تشعر أحيانا وكأنها في قلب كابوس.
واحتدم الجدل يوم الأحد بكتابة ترامب على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي قائلا إن عضوات الكونغرس اللائي ينتقدن الولايات المتحدة يجدر بهن “العودة إلى الأماكن المنهارة والموبوءة بالجريمة التي قدمن منها والمساعدة في إصلاح أمورها، ثم الرجوع إلينا وإخبارنا كيف سارت الأمور”.
وكان كلامه موجها لأربع من عضوات الكونغرس – إلهان عمر نائبة مينيسوتا؛ وألكساندريا أوكاسيو-كورتيز نائبة كوينز في نيويورك؛ ورشيدة طليب نائبة ميشيغان؛ وأيانا بريسلي نائبة ماساتشوستس- وهن لسن من ذوات البشرة البيضاء.
وكانت قيادة حزب الديمقراطيين عنيفة في إدانتها. وانتقدت زعيمة الديمقراطيين في مجلس النواب نانسي بيلوسي، تغريدات الرئيس ترامب قائلة إنه في شعاره “عودة أمريكا عظيمة مرة أخرى” إنما قصد “عودة أمريكا بيضاء مرة أخرى”.
هذه القضايا ماثلة أيضا حيث تقيم مورشتاين في ليسبورغ التابعة لمقاطعة لودون في ولاية فرجينيا، التي دعمت العديد من المرشحين الجمهوريين للرئاسة في الماضي، ومرشحا ديمقراطيا واحدا على الأقل.
لكن قلة من المرشحين الرئاسيين، بغض النظر عن انتماءاتهم السياسية، أثاروا قلق مقاطعة لودون بالقدر الذي استطاعه ترامب.
ويقول أمثال مورشتاين من المقيمين منذ زمن في المقاطعة إن الجدل السياسي اليوم أكثر إثارة للاستقطاب مما كان عليه في الماضي.
وتفضل مورشتاين الحديث عن حملة 2020 الانتخابية في أوساط خاصة، وليس في أماكن يسترق فيها الناس السمع (وقد يحتدّون في تفاعلاتهم بشأن آرائهم السياسية).
وتقول مورشتاين إن الناس يتفاعلون مع لغة الرئيس بشكل عاطفي، مما يثير حالة من الجدل وإن كان يدفع العديد إلى اتخاذ خطوة على الصعيد السياسي.
وأعربت ميتشل توماس، راعية في إحدى كنائس مقاطعة لودون في فرجينيا، عن اندهاشها من مطالبة الرئيس لبعض الناس في الولايات المتحدة بالعودة إلى البلاد التي قدموا منها.
وقالت ميتشل: “مَن يحق له القول؟ وهل الملونون فقط من يتعين عليهم العودة؟”
“العنصرية سلوك مكتسب بالتعليم. إنه يعلم أمريكا الكراهية مرة أخرى”.
تقول بوتا بايبيراج، محامية وعضوة مجلس إدارة الجمعية الوطنية للنهوض بالملونين في المقاطعة، إن حديث الرئيس ترامب يؤثر على المستويين الوطني والمحلي، وتضيف: “إنه معلّم في مدرسة ‘فرّق تسد’. إنه يضع الناس في مواجهة ضد بعضهم البعض”.
وإذْ تتحدث مورشتاين عن الرئيس وتغريداته فإنها تقف على مسافة قريبة من نصب تذكاري أقيم في ليسبورغ عام 1908. وتقف مثل هذه التماثيل لتذكر الناس بالصعوبات التي عانتها الولايات المتحدة ولا تزال في مواجهة ماضيها العنصري.
ويعتبر البعض مثل تلك الأنصاب رموزا يتعين محوها من أمريكا المعاصرة – بينما يراها البعض الآخر نقطة التقاء وتذكير مهمة.

ويتفق جون هانتر، المتقاعد حديثا، مع هذا الرأي، ويقول إن رد فعل الناس تجاه تصريحات الرئيس المتعلقة بعضوات الكونغرس مبالغ فيه.
أما هانتر فيقول إن ما يهتم به هو “أداء” الرئيس وليس تغريداته. “هذا هو أسلوبه؛ إنه ليس عنصريا”.
ويتفق الناس في ليسبورغ على أمر واحد هو أن مَن يثيرهم أداء الرئيس سواء بالإعجاب أو الكراهية، هم من سيحرصون أكثر مَن غيرهم على التصويت. وسيحسم الفريق الأقوى الانتخابات سواء في مقاطعة لودون أو حول الولايات المتحدة.
تقول مورشتاين: “ما يفعله (ترامب) سيدفع الناس إلى الخروج للتصويت. أيا كانت النتيجة”.
