الشهيرة في عالم الاستكشاف “السيد لفنغستون… كما أفترض” يغرق في ضحكة مجلجلة توقعه أحياناً على قفاه جاراً معه كل العاملين إلى ضحك لم يفهموا سره، على أية حال “في النهاية، يكتب زانوك، اضطررنا لتصوير كل المشاهد التي يتفوه فيها سبنسر بهذه العبارة على حدة!”. أما سبنسر فقال دائماً إنه لم يفهم أبداً لماذا كان يضحك وظل يضحك بعد سنوات من انتهاء التصوير كلما ذكرت تلك الجملة أمامه أو تذكرها. الويلزي ينقذ الاسكتلندي ومع ذلك نعرف أن ليس ثمة، في تاريخ “الاكتشافات” الجغرافية، عبارة أشهر من تلك العبارة التي واجه بها ستانلي الويلزي، مواطنه الاسكتلندي ليفنغستون، حين عثر عليه، أخيراً، حياً في المجاهل في مثل هذا اليوم قبل قرن ونصف القرن، تحديداً في خريف 1871، علماً بأن التاريخ يتبدل بين أكتوبر (تشرين الأول) ونوفمبر (تشرين الثاني) تبعاً لرواية كل من المستكشفين. ومهما يكن من أمر لا بد من أن نشير إلى أن ستانلي كان لديه من الوقت ما يكفي لدعم التاريخ الذي يحدده هو الذي عاش ثلث قرن بعد ذلك، فيما رحل لفنغستون بعد أقل من عامين على العثور عليه لتضيع “حقيقته” إلى الأبد! لكن كان من حظه أن الذين رفضوا الحكاية التي ظل ستانلي يرددها طوال سنوات حياته التالية، وأكدها في كتابه الأشهر “كيف عثرت على لفنغستون”، كانوا أكثر كثيراً من الذين شككوا في الحكايات القليلة التي أتاح الوقت للفنغستون أن يحكيها. غير أن ذلك لم يمنع التاريخ من أن يقف دائماً إلى جانب ستانلي على الرغم من موقف أعضاء الجمعية الملكية الجغرافية الذين ناصبوه العداء، خصوصاً للحقائق الواهية التي ملأت كتابه، لكن أيضاً لأنه حين توجه إلى أفريقيا الوسطى بحثاً عن لفنغستون، توجه إليها كمواطن أميركي يشتغل لحساب صحيفة “أميركيا”، قبل أن يرتد لاحقاً إلى جنسيته البريطانية ويحوز لقب “سير” فيما كان رفيقه المسكين قد أخلد إلى الراحة الأبدية. ضجة حول “حقائق” كتاب على الرغم من الشعبية الكبيرة التي كانت من نصيب ذلك الكتاب الذي صدر عام 1872 ولم يكن لفنغستون قد مات بعد، لكنه كان أعجز من أن يقرأ الكتاب أو يرد عليه “مصححاً كثيراً من المغالطات” التي وردت فيه، وكما رأى أعضاء الجمعية الملكية، فإن كثراً لم يأخذوه مأخذ الجدية، وهو ما سوف يؤكده الفيلم الذي أشرنا إليه الذي استند من ناحية إلى الكتاب، لكن من ناحية أخرى إلى موقف الجغرافيين الملكيين، وربما في ثنايا هذا الأمر يمكن العثور على خلفيات ضحكة سبنسر تراسي المجلجلة، حتى وإن لم تكن هي ما يهمنا هنا. توجه ستانلي إلى أفريقيا الوسطى بحثاً عن لفنغستون (غيتي) فاليوم، وعلى ضوء الصراعات القائمة حول مياه النيل واقتسامها بين إثيوبيا والسودان ومصر، نستعيد بالطبع ذكرى تلك اللحظة البالغة الخصوصية في تاريخ “اكتشاف” منابع النيل لنشير قبل أي شيء آخر إلى خطأ ذلك التعبير نفسه، الذي سوف يناقش كثيراً لاحقاً لا سيما مع بروز الثقافات الما – بعد – كولونيالية التي رفضت فكرة “الاكتشاف” تماماً، باعتبارها فكرة كولونيالية خالصة كما نعرف. فكرة يعد استخدامها افتئاتاً على شعوب كانت ولا تزال تعيش حياتها، لكن الغرب، بسبب أنانيته ومركزته الكون والتاريخ حول ذاته، كان يعتبر وصوله، هو، إلى أية منطقة من مناطق العالم اكتشافاً. غير أن هذا الأمر كان لا يزال بعيداً عن الأذهان، عام 1904 حين رحل سير هنري مورتون ستانلي عن عالمنا وهو مكلل بألغاز، كونه ارتاد تلك المناطق القصية، وتمكن بالتالي من أن يضم إلى الإمبراطورية البريطانية أراضي شاسعة. كان يُنظر إليها على أنها بلاد اللا – أحد. حياة حافلة بالمغامرات ولد ستانلي (كان اسمه الأصلي جون رولاندز الذي سيبدله لاحقاً في نيو أورليانز الأميركية إلى هنري ستانلي على اسم تاجر التقاه وارتبط به) عام 1841 في مقاطعة ويلز البريطانية، وهو عاش كما روى لنا في كتابه الذي شكك بصحة معلوماته كثيرون لاحقاً، طفولة لا تختلف كثيراً عن طفولة الأطفال البائسين الذين اعتاد مواطنه تشارلز ديكنز أن يصورهم في رواياته. وكان في الخامسة عشرة حين بدأ يخوض الحياة بحاراً وعاملاً بائساً حتى أوصلته أقداره إلى ولاية أركنساس الأميركية، حيث اشتغل صبياً في دكان. وهناك فاجأته الحرب الأهلية، وانضم إلى الاتحاديين، ما أدى إلى أسره واعتقاله في شيكاغو. وعند ذلك غيّر توجهه، وانضم إلى الشماليين، ثم سرعان ما أعفي من الخدمة لأسباب صحية، وعاد إلى العمل كبحار ما أوصله إلى موانئ إسبانيا. ومن هناك بدل مهنته من جديد، وصار صحافياً يزود الصحف الإنجليزية بالأخبار، ويتابع في سبيل ذلك جولاته البحرية التي قاده بعضها إلى سواحل الهند. العثور على المستكشف الضائع وبين 1867 و1868 توجه ستانلي إلى الحبشة يغطي، صحافياً، حملة بينيت الاستكشافية هناك، وبعد عام، خطر في بال بينيت أن يسند إليه مهمة التوجه إلى مجاهل المنطقة، للبحث عن المستــكشف ليفنغستون. وهي مهمة استغرقت عامين ونصف العام من حياة ستانلي، وانتهت في خريف 1871، بالعثور على المستكشف الضائع. وكان ذلك هو السبب الأساسي في الشهرة المفاجئة التي صارت من نصيب ستانلي الذي رافق بعد ذلك الجيش البريطاني لتغطية حملته على أشانتي. وفي عام 1874 حنّ إلى الاستكشاف من جديد، فأبحر من بريطانيا إلى أفريقيا. وهو، هذه المرة، وصل إلى مناطق غير بعيدة من بحيرة فيكتوريا وبحيرة تانجانيكا، ثم تابع طريقه نزولاً حتى نهر الكونغو وصولاً إلى البحر بعد ذلك. وهو كان بدأ رحلته مع ثلاثة رفاق بيض له، وفي صحبتهم 356 أفريقياً، ليصل في النهاية وليس إلى جانبه سوى 82 أفريقياً. أما الرحلة نفسها فاستغرقت 999 يوماً. وخلال السنوات الخمس التالية، أمضى ستانلي ودائماً كما يروي بنفسه، وقته وهو يطور اكتشافاته ويضمها قطعة قطعة إلى الإمبراطورية البريطانية. غير أنه سرعان ما وسع أشغاله بعد ذلك، إذ نراه في لحظة ما، يؤسس دولة كونغو الحرة لحساب الملك البلجيكي ليوبولد الثاني. والغريب أننا نراه في عام 1885، وقد قرر أن يستعيد جنسيته الأميركية. ولقد قيل في تفسير ذلك، إنه إنما كان يتوق إلى حماية حقوق كتبه (التي كان بدأ ينشرها، وتنال نجاحاً كبيراً) من قرصنة الناشرين الأميركيين. حملة أخيرة لإنقاذ الحاكم المصري في عام 1887 توجه ستانلي ليقوم بآخر رحلة استكشاف أفريقية له، فقد تولى قيادة أكبر حملة منهم على قيد الحياة في النهاية سوى أقل من مئتين. والطريف في ذلك كله، أن أمين باشا أعلن، ما أن وصل ستانلي لإنقاذه، أنه لا يريد أن ينقذه أحد، وأنه راض بوضعه. وفي عام 1892 لم يبق أمام ستانلي إلا أن يطلب من الإنجليز إعادته إلى لندن بصفته مواطناً بريطانياً في خطر، فأعيد بالفعل لتنتهي حياته كمستكشف. وليبدأ مساراً سياسياً شاء من خلاله أن يصبح عضواً في البرلمان. فشل أولاً، لكنه في عام 1895 انتخب بالفعل،
